Before each trip, you should always check the following:
- Coupler securely engages your hitch. The coupler and hitch ball must be rated for the same size – the size should be imprinted on both the ball and the hitch.
- Never tow your trailer with the wheel jack exposed – remove it prior to travel
- Inspect the winch strap and safety chains to make sure they are in good condition and not showing signs of wear.
- Never carry any passengers in the trailer while it is in tow
- Ensure your doors, hatch, are closed and locked prior to towing
- Make sure the stabilizer jacks are locked in the “up” position prior to towing
- Inspect all lights to ensure they are functioning properly
- Check your tire pressure and visually inspect all tires for wear
- Inspect the coupler or actuator for damage
- If your trailer has brakes, be sure to test them before you get out on the road.
- Check condition and tightness of bolts, fasteners and tie downs.
- Inspect the boat trailers bunks or rollers to ensure they are in good condition and working properly.
After each trip:
- It is always a good idea to rinse your trailer thoroughly with fresh water in case of boat trailers
- This is also a good time to inspect the trailer frame for scratches in the paint finish that may need to be touched up.
